6 Signs Your Boiler is Struggling

white question mark on blue backgroundThe only way that your boiler system has any hope of working as it is supposed to is if you care for it properly. This means many things: that it should be professionally installed, that you should schedule routine maintenance for the system, and that you should only trust professionals for adequate Evanston, IL boiler repair.

Of course, it’s also important to remember that even with this level of care, there’s still a chance that something will go wrong with your boiler system in the future, and eventually it will wear down to the point that it may need major repairs, or even replacement. However, do you know what indicators to look for when it comes to a boiler that’s struggling to do its job effectively and efficiently anymore? Check out these 6 signs, below.

Sign #1: Your Boiler Is OLD

When well-cared for, the average boiler can last 15 years, maybe a little more. But even if your system hasn’t reached this age yet, it could be worth looking into upgrading your heating system if you’re having any current boiler problems.

Even in the last 5–10 years, advances have been made that allow boilers to work more efficiently than ever before. And if your boiler is 15 years old, it’s more than likely going to start showing the following signs of distress.

Sign #2: You Detect Foul Odors

Unfamiliar or unpleasant smells is nothing to be ignored. It could signal a gas leak, which is something that requires attention right away once you notice it. Even if you’re not dealing with a gas leak, foul smells can indicate a problem with the ventilation system and should be checked out right away.

Sign #3: Leaks

Do not ignore a boiler leak. This can not only be the cause of significant property damage in your home, but it can also be the sign of something going wrong inside your boiler. Additionally, if you’re losing water then your boiler cannot possibly work as efficiently as it’s meant to.

Sign #4: Temperature Inconsistencies

Is your water typically colder or hotter than what the temperature is meant to be? Then you may very well have an issue with your boiler system. The water is probably not circulating correctly, which means that your boiler can’t consistently heat your home.

Sign #5: High Utility Bills

Of course, your utility bills are going to rise in the winter as you use your boiler more and more. But what you should be looking at is whether or not your bills this year are significantly higher than what they were last year, or significantly higher than what your neighbors are paying to heat their homes with a boiler. Increased utility bills are a sign that your boiler isn’t working effectively or efficiently.

Sign #6: Frequent Repairs

Any of the above-mentioned issues, with the exception of old age, might just need a repair to get the boiler back up and running. But you shouldn’t need to call for repairs too often. If you find yourself calling in for this service a few times a year, and your boiler is getting old, then it’s probably a better economical choice to look into replacement rather than investing in yet another repair.

To get your boiler back up and running ASAP, simply contact Shavitz Heating and Air Conditioning any time—we offer emergency services!
