Air Conditioning Problems to Be Aware Of

With the days starting to warm up, it is important to keep an eye on your air conditioner. Problems with the system are more likely to develop during times of increased stress, like during summer. The better able you are to recognize signs of an issue, the faster you’ll be able to get the problem fixed and the better off your air conditioner will be. Let’s take a look at some of the common air conditioning problems that you need to be aware of this summer.

Refrigerant Leaks

When an air conditioner is installed, it is given a set amount of refrigerant. That initial charge of refrigerant is meant to last the entire lifespan of the air conditioner. Refrigerant is the fluid that absorbs heat from inside your home and releases it outside. Without refrigerant, your air conditioner couldn’t function. If a leak develops in the refrigerant line, it will eventually drain your system of the fluid, causing it to break down. If you notice liquid dripping from your air conditioner, call a professional immediately.

Ice on Evaporator Coil

The evaporator coil is the part that evaporates refrigerant to draw heat out of the air around it. This causes the air around it to get colder, and that cool air is then circulated throughout your house. If the evaporator coil becomes dirty, however, it will be cut off from the warm air that it needs to keep a proper temperature balance. This will cause the coil to freeze over, which will prevent it from absorbing any more heat. If there is ice forming on your air conditioner, you’ll need to call a professional to fix it right away. Otherwise, the weight of the ice can permanently damage the coil.
