Are UV Germicidal Lights Worth It?

When you are looking for a new air filtration system for your home, it’s important to understand that each has its own method of removing harmful pollutants from your indoor air. Overall, your goal should be to improve your indoor air quality as best as possible for your health and the health of your family. The air filter that comes standard with your HVAC system is not enough. In fact, it’s designed to protect the internal components of the system, not your indoor air. For an air cleaning device that truly eliminates contaminants, you’ll want to look to UV germicidal lights.

But Are They Worth It?

Dust and dirt can be eliminated from your air with an electronic air purifier or mechanical air purifier, but what about biological contaminants? Mold, viruses, bacteria, and fungi can develop within your ductwork, resulting in adverse health effects for you and your family. These microorganisms build up in cold, dark environments, which is why your ducts are such a prime location. Traditional air filters simply cannot effectively reach or eliminate these, but UV germicidal lights can be installed right into your ductwork, and the UV radiation generated by them causes cellular damage to and destroys these pollutants.

The Benefits

Mold is more than just unsightly. It’s not healthy to breathe in, and can be particularly bad for those who suffer from allergies or asthma. Ridding your home of dust and pet dander is simply not enough. UV air purifiers destroy microorganisms such as germs, viruses, bacteria, and fungi, which means the number of airborne allergens that plague many people will be reduced.

Effectiveness

In commercial settings, UV germicidal lights are most often used in combination with HEPA (high efficiency particulate arrestor) filters to provide a wholly-sterilized environment. Since installing UV germicidal lights, many businesses throughout the country have reported fewer illnesses. In fact they are now so trusted that even many hospitals utilize them.
