Signs of a Boiler in Distress

boiler-distress-signsA boiler can only be as efficient as it’s meant to be if it’s properly cared for. This means that it should be professionally installed, repaired, and maintained by experienced technicians for it to perform at its best.

It’s also important to remember that even with quality Winnetka, IL boiler services, there’s still the chance that something will eventually go wrong with your heating system, and eventually your boiler will wear down to the point that it needs to be replaced.

But do you know what signs to look for when it comes to determining if your boiler is, in fact, in distress?

First, Look at Its Age

The typical boiler, when well-maintained, can last around 15 years. Even if yours hasn’t quite reached this age yet, it’s worth looking into upgrading your heating system, since even in the last 5 years boilers have become much more efficient. If your system is 15 years old, or older, then it’s more likely that it will start to show signs of distress soon.

Bad Smells

Unfamiliar or unpleasant odors should never be ignored. They could be indicative of a gas leak, which should be taken care of as soon as possible after you notice it. Even if it’s not a gas leak, bad smells might be the result of a problem with your ventilation system.

Leaks

A leak is something that should never be ignored when it comes to your boiler. Not only can this create significant property damage in your home, it can be indicative of something going wrong inside your boiler, plus it can lead to system inefficiency.

Temperature Problems

If your water is usually colder or hotter than what the temperature is supposed to be, then you could very well have a problem with your boiler. The water is likely not circulating as it should be, which means your boiler cannot possibly consistently heat your home.

High Utility Bills

Of course, your energy bills are going to rise the more you use your boiler dring the winter. However, if they’re significantly higher to what they were last year, or compared to what your neighbors are paying for similar use, then you most likely have a system that’s not performing as efficiently and effectively as it once was.

Frequent Repairs

The above-mentioned issues may all be resolved with a repair. However, if you find that you are frequently calling for repair needs, then it could be time to replace and upgrade the boiler altogether. A new boiler may seem like a pretty big investment, but think about the mounting costs of repairs.

Typically, if you have a pending repair that’s going to cost at least half of what a new boiler system would, it’s going to be more cost-effective to replace than it would be to do one more repair. Maintenance helps prevent premature breakdown, but eventually it’s just time.

Whether you are in need of quality boiler repairs or think it may be time for a boiler replacement, you can count on Shavitz Heating and Air Conditioning to get the job done right. Contact us today!
