Signs You Have a Broken Air Conditioning Compressor

Your air conditioning system is a pretty incredible feat of engineering. There are many different critical components that allow your AC to remove heat from your home and exhaust it outside. One of those components is the compressor. If your compressor starts to have any issues then you will definitely start to have some big issues with your home’s cooling. Here at Shavitz, we offer complete Evanston, IL air conditioning repair services and we wanted to put together a few of the more common signs that could indicate that you need to repair your AC system.

How Air Conditioners Work

Before we talk about compressor issues, it’s important to know exactly what the compressor does. Your compressor’s job is to compress a refrigerant that is then circulated to the evaporator coils that are located in the indoor unit of your home’s AC system. The refrigerant is then released from the pressure which makes the evaporator coils very cold. The fan in your indoor unit blows the warm air form your home over the coils thereby cooling the air. The newly cooled air is pushed into your home while the newly warmed refrigerant is circulated to the outdoor condensing unit where the heat is exhausted into the outside air.

Evanston, IL Air Conditioning Repair: Is My Compressor Broken?

If your compressor isn’t able to properly compress the refrigerant, your AC system won’t be able to work well. Look for some of the following signs that could indicate that your compressor is broken.

  • Not enough cooling – If your air conditioning system isn’t producing enough cooling for your home it could be the fault of the compressor. Your AC system needs the refrigerant flowing into the evaporator coils to be under very high pressure. If that pressure isn’t achieved, then your system won’t be able to cool the air enough.
  • Hissing noises – If you hear hissing coming from your air conditioning system it could be coming from the compressor. Not only will this reduce the amount of pressure that your compressor can achieve but it can also cause refrigerant to leak out.
  • Noises – Your compressor has a motor that it uses to compress the refrigerant. If the motor isn’t working well it could start to operate at a higher volume. Keep an ear out for this problem.
