Why You Should Get Your Ducts Sealed This Winter

Ducts don’t get nearly enough professional attention over their years of service, and no wonder. They are designed to be as unobtrusive as possible, and as a result they are often ignored. Ducts develop problems just as much as any other part of the house, and one problem in particular can have a serious effect on the efficiency of your heating system. Read on to find out more about duct leaks, and how duct sealing can address them.

Duct Leaks

Ducts are extraordinarily susceptible to leaks. From minor mistakes made during installation to years of normal use, duct leaks can form at any point in the lifespan of the ducts. While individual leaks may be minor, they can quickly add up. The US Department of Energy has estimated that up to 30% of the average forced-air system’s total output is lost to duct leaks. That means that almost a third of the total output that you’re paying for is going to waste. Not only does this waste money by making your system more inefficient, but it makes your home less comfortable as well. This is why duct sealing is so important.

Duct Sealing

Duct sealing is the process of finding and closing leaks in your home’s ductwork. Once the leaks are located, the most common solution is to paint over them with mastic. Mastic is a viscous material that stiffens once dry, enough to seal the leak. However, it is also flexible enough to move with the ducts without cracking. If needed, the mastic is then supplemented with specialized regulation duct tape. This will help restore that 30% output efficiency to your heating system.

If you haven’t had your ducts sealed in at least a year, call Shavitz Heating and Air Conditioning. We offer a full range of duct sealing services throughout Chicago, IL.
