What’s Wrong With My Ductless Mini Split AC?

A ductless mini split AC is a great solution for heating and cooling your home. However, just like any other heating and cooling system, it can face problems from time to time. Sometimes there are issues that you can address yourself, but other times you need to call our team of experts.

You can keep reading to learn more about ductless mini split AC repair in Glenview so that you know what to expect if your ductless unit is experiencing problems. Then give us a call and we can help you find a solution and hopefully prevent the problem from happening again in the future.

Water Leaks

Just like a whole house air conditioning system, your ductless mini split has a condensate drain line. Each individual unit is simultaneously removing heat and additional moisture from the air. If the condensate drain line gets clogged, water could back up and leak out into the room.

This is why it’s crucial to clean the air filters diligently and on a regular basis every 1-3 months. If you notice a leak, give our team a call right away so we can clean out the drain line and make suggestions for preventing the problem again in the future.

Unusual Sounds

Your mini split unit should be fairly silent as it cools your home. However, there are some sounds that you may hear as a part of normal operation. Popping and clicking can happen if the plastic expands and contracts during temperature changes. You may also hear a crackling or gurgling sound if your mini split has to switch over to defrost mode. None of these sounds are concerning unless you begin to hear them too frequently. For example, if your mini split sounds like it is constantly in defrost mode, that’s a sign that something is wrong with the unit.

Lack of Heat

Your ductless mini split unit is heating and cooling all in one. It’s equally possible that your mini split could have problems with heating. If you switch a unit over from cooling mode to heating mode and don’t feel hot air, you may have frozen coils. If this happens, there may not be enough refrigerant or there may be broken sensors somewhere inside of the unit. In this case, you need to give our team a call to check it out.

Too Much Humidity

If your house feels too humid, your mini split unit may be struggling to remove moisture from the air. The process of cooling your home has two parts. One is removing heat from the air, and another is removing some of the moisture from the air.

If your condensate drain line is clogged, there’s a good chance that humidity is not being removed. It’s also possible that the mini split unit is too large for the space it’s trying to cool. If your mini split unit is too big, it will cool the room quickly and shut off before having a chance to also dehumidify the air.

Bad Smells

If your rooms begin to smell musty or sour, there may be mold developing inside one of the mini split units. In this case, the condensate drain line needs to be cleaned. Smelling vinegar or a similarly sweet odor can mean you have a mold issue which is dangerous for your family’s health. A refrigerant leak can also mean that your mini split unit cannot cool your home effectively.
