End-of-Season Heating Repairs to Be Aware Of

white-question-mark-on-blue-background

Winter is finally over, and now your furnace can get some rest. However, depending on how hard your furnace worked this past cold season, it might be in need of repair. In this article, we will lay out 5 tell-tale signs that your heater is in need of repair. If you notice any of these, don’t hesitate to reach out to us!

Weird Smells and Odors

Did you turn on the heater and it smells like something is burning? If it’s the first time you’re turning on the furnace, then that is okay. It’s simply old dirt and dust being burnt off. However, if it doesn’t go away in a timely manner, then that’s a sign something is going wrong inside your heating system.

Any other strange smells should be cause for concern. For instance, if it smells musty or stale, then that could mean there is moisture buildup somewhere. If not properly ventilated, then mold and mildew can start to grow which becomes a serious health concern that should be taken care of immediately.

Strange or Unexpected Noises

Sometimes, your furnace will literally tell you something is wrong. In most cases, a dull rumbling or humming can be heard from the furnace. You may also hear the sound of air rolling through the ducts and vents. These are normal and shouldn’t ring any alarm bells.

However, if you notice any new or loud sounds, then it might be worth having a professional come check it out. Here are some examples of noises your furnace should NOT be making:

  • Banging
  • Exploding
  • Clanging
  • Clunking
  • Screeching
  • Whining
  • Clicking

But this list isn’t exhaustive and there are plenty of strange noises that can come for a heater in need of repair.

Your Furnace is Getting Old

How long have you had your furnace? If it’s reaching the 15-20 year mark, then it might be time for an upgrade. Older furnaces tend to have more issues and are less energy efficient. Now that spring is here, it’s a great opportunity to replace your heater when you don’t need to use it and can afford the downtime.

Increased Energy Bills

Sometimes your bill can tell you something is up too. If you’re noticing you’re spending more (especially towards the end of winter when it was warmer), then it’s a sign your heater is working as efficiently as it should. Paying for a repair now will save you a lot more money in the future.

The Heater isn’t Heating Up Your Home

Did you notice your home wasn’t heating up like it usually does towards the end of winter? That’s an obvious sign that your furnace is in need of repair. If the air coming from the vents is lukewarm or even cold, give us a call and we can get down to the bottom of it. It could be an issue with the thermostat or some internal components of the heater. Either one can negatively impact your furnace’s performance and energy efficiency.
