The Best Way to Boost AC Efficiency and Save Money!

air-conditioner-on-pile-of-money

In order to stay comfortable in our part of the world, it’s absolutely vital to have a powerful air conditioner. But when it comes to cooling your home, you want to do so affordably as well, right?

With rising energy prices, many homeowners today are looking for ways to bring down their financial obligations. This might mean even avoiding the use of their air conditioners even though they’re really uncomfortable. The good news is, you really don’t have to avoid using your air conditioner. In fact, there are ways you can use it better that will make more efficient use of your energy and therefore, save you money. Read on to learn more!

Schedule AC Maintenance

If you haven’t done so yet this year, now is the perfect time to schedule your annual professional AC maintenance appointment with our team–biannual if you have a heat pump. Your air conditioner is like any other heavy piece of equipment in that it needs regular checkups to ensure that it works as best it can.

Maintenance allows our professionals to comprehensively inspect, clean, and adjust the components that need it. This reduces wear and tear, and even reduces repair needs as a result. In fact, routine air conditioning maintenance can help you avoid up to 85% of the repair needs your system might ever need in its lifetime. Plus it can help your system retain up to 95% of its original efficiency rating!

Change the Air Filter

Homeowners often don’t realize this, but the air filter that comes standard with their air conditioner is in place to protect the air conditioner, not their indoor air. The air filter blocks things like dust, pet dander, and more from getting inside and harming the sensitive components of the air conditioning system.

Changing the air filter is something that homeowners can and should be doing on their own, every 1-3 months during periods of HVAC use.

Have Necessary Repairs Done ASAP

We know we said above that maintenance helps you avoid up to 85% of the repairs your air conditioner may ever need in its lifetime. This is true! However, there is still that 15%. These areoften repair needs that we catch during maintenance, and alert you to right away.

However, given that you have a year between maintenance tune-ups, that repair need might have been there for months. So managing it ASAP will help your system work more efficiently.

Set Your Thermostat to a Reasonable Temperature

Did you know most people are perfectly comfortable with a thermostat setting of 78°F? Yet, many people get home after a day of work to a hot home, and set their thermostats down as low as 70°F, or even lower if the thermostat allows. The problem with this is that it doesn’t cool down your living space any faster. It just causes your air conditioner to run longer.

It’s actually more efficient to have a temperature setting of 78°F all day, or even a bit higher, even if you aren’t home.

You can also use your ceiling fans, when you are home! This won’t lower the temperature inside your living space, but it will better distribute the cooled air coming from your AC vents, and therefore make it easier for you to raise the temperature on your thermostat so your air conditioner doesn’t have to run as long.
